Hill work is paying off

This was supposed to a nice easy week in a 4 week cycle so fairly low mileage but a race on Monday and full effort parkrun gave a good feel for where I’m at with London only 3 weeks away.

We did have plans of visiting a new parkrun in Sheffield but in the end stuck with Huddersfield because we had other plans for the day and also because it was the 4th anniversary of the 1st Huddersfield parkrun and amazing really that it’s grown to frequently be the second biggest in the world with around 600 runners.

The week started with the return of The Trunce on a wet, windy and freezing cold Monday night with a few Meltham runners. It’s a tough little 4 mile trail race and while I was initially disappointed to only beat my time from last year by 30 seconds the conditions were significantly worse and others seemed to be a couple of minutes down on their times in better, dryer weather so a good result running 29:12 for 21st place.

The Trunce Race – one of three freezing river crossings

The week was bookended with a full effort parkrun at Huddersfield finishing in 5th and with a new PB of 17:14 which I was thrilled with.

The effort level in the last mile was high but the first two were pretty comfortable and it’s on a course that with so many sharp turns back on yourself isn’t the easiest to maintain a consistent effort so I hope that even though that is a 20 second PB on the last time I ran Huddersfield, on a flatter, more “rounded” course I am within reach of 16:xx.

My knee finally feels like it’s getting back to normal and I’m very pleased to have made the decision a few weeks back to go back to training and running more on the trails for my London Marathon prep.

The hills are definitely benefitting my running and the enjoyment and mojo is coming back too.
